Lady of lancashire

Lifeboat ‘Lady of Lancashire’  (1976 – 1989)

The former Watson class lifeboat Ann Letitia Russell was replaced by a faster offshore lifeboat.  Based on an American Coastguard Cutter design this Waveney class lifeboat had an operational speed of 16 knots.  The Duke of Kent named the lifeboat Lady of Lancashire at a service of dedication on 20th July, 1976.  She had been provided by the gift of an anonymous donor, who in later years was named as Mr. Philip Leigh-Bramwell, a Lancashire businessman.  Because this lifeboat had exposed propellers it could not be slipway launched.  A special lifeboat dock was built, in the present location of the lifeboat station, adjacent to the Knott-End Ferry dock.

Her faster speed (almost double that if her predecessor) was extremely useful but this was achieved by having her propellers exposed beneath the hull, unlike the Ann Letitia Russell where the propellers were protected in tunnels.
